Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition characterized by patches of the skin losing their pigment. The patches of skin affected become white with contrasting margins. The disease is due to destruction of melanocytes, the melanin producing cells in the skin by immune cells. Exposed body sites, such as the face, elbows, knees, hands and feet, are often involved, resulting in significant cosmetic concerns. Vitiligo is usually treated with creams and tablets, or by phototherapy. Vitiligo may fail to improve or clear with these treatments.
